The pitch sounds great.

How it plays
Profit is not cash. Growth is not certainty. Each file gives you something to investigate before the next decision.
01 / Investigate
Compare income statements, balance sheets and cash flows. Read the market news, mark a suspicious line and ask management a question.
02 / Decide
Buy, pass, invest or restructure. Weigh the price against what the file tells you and the cash you can afford to put at risk.
03 / Adapt
Markets shift. Debt comes due. A plan takes time to work. Read the next period’s results and decide what to do differently.
Six ways to play
Every role changes the question: what to buy, where to invest, what to investigate or how to save a struggling company.
01 / 60 years to build your group
Read three years of accounts, negotiate an acquisition and choose how to finance it. Keep an eye on cash, debt and the businesses you already own.
02 / A portfolio. A promise to investors.
Set an investment mandate, allocate capital and face withdrawals when investors lose confidence. Your fund’s size and its return are different measures.
03 / A thesis under pressure
Take long and short positions, weigh catalysts and manage leverage. A changing market can test your thesis—and your margin—before you are proved right.
04 / Follow the evidence
Read linked financial records, flag inconsistencies and request support for your findings. Work through a career or try a timed shift challenge.
05 / Twelve quarters to change course
Split a limited budget between recovery measures and a cash reserve. Some choices cost money now and only show their effects in later quarters.
06 / Keep the plan viable
Compare a rescue plan with liquidation, negotiate recoveries for creditor groups and secure financing before the deadline.

For curious minds
You do not need to be a finance professional to be curious about a business. A glossary and linked records help you find your way through the numbers.
